Nope...you aren't the only one that hasn't been doing this correctly. I sure learned something by this. I can hardly wait to correct my mirrors! Thanks!!!!!!
Interesting. That's not what I was taught in my defensive driving class. I would think that you would want to see your car, to help you get your bearings. And like the guy said, you should look before you leap--which is why you can't always trust your mirrors. I was taught to always take a quick glance. That glance has saved my life a few times for sure.
I'd be interested to hear any thoughts Dennis might have on this. After all, he is the cop.
This IS what I was taught and I was also told at the time that 99% of Americans do it improperly. The whole point of your mirror is to see the lane next to you not the side of your car! But you still need to look over your shoulder before changing lanes, looking in your mirrors is never enough. I keep trying to convince my husband that he does it improperly, but so far he still likes to see the edge of his car to get his bearings but then he misses what is in the lane next to him. If you know where it's pointing and what you are seeing then you should have your bearings anyway. You know what your looking at because YOU pointed it there!
Love it, Jill. Truthfully, though, tonight I'm PSYCHED about Brock's COMIC, MONSTERPLEX, at zuda.com . It's in FIRST PLACE, but the vote is close. Anyone out there reading this, please go vote, give it a five-star rating, favorite it, and leave a comment. Brock DESERVES this DC Comics Contract! Lynn
I watched your video clip on the side mirrors yesterday. Then when I went out last night I adjusted them and drove in the dark a few miles with the mirrors like this. I can see how they give you more view of the blind spots...but it will definitely take some getting used to.

Thanks Jil. I will try this. I have been doing it wrong too.
We were all apparently taught incorrectly. I was taugh to always look over my shoulder too before changing lanes. thanks for the tip!
I think we are still suppose to look over our shoulder before changing lanes. I don't think there is any substitute for that. Right?
Karen, good idea, I should have asked Dennis. I'm not totally convinced this video is correct.

Good post Jill! Good info and Obviously you're not the only one.
This from the lady that dumped a hot pot roast on her two year old...you've come a long way.

Thanks for passing useful info along!

I've been doing this wrong, too. I always make it so I can see a little bit of my car...just a little, but still, I can always see it.
Good information! Thanks, Jill.
