What 9 year old girls talk about

While her parents were hiking up in our smokey mountains,

and her twin brother at his friend's house,
Tea moved in with us for several days.

I wonder how we must seem to her. Probably very old.

Yet still it didn't stop her from chatting away.

So many important things....
like she's trying to decide what color of
glow in the dark bands she wants on her braces.

She tells us how she has to "watch" her sister
when she has her friend over.
"Her friend is a boy but he is just a friend," she tells us.

Then she adds, "He sent her flowers on her birthday."
That doesn't sound like "just a friend" to her grandparents!

She tells us about the hike she took last week with her
parents....how she didn't like getting so tired and sore. And about
eating cold oatmeal, "It was disgusting."

She tried to count on her fingers how many friends she has.

We did have one little problem.

While Téa was getting ready for bed Den took me aside and said,
"Téa's tooth just fell out."

"So that's good, right?"

Den continued,
"She is worried that if she puts her tooth under her pillow
and the tooth fairy comes,
then she won't get to show it to her mom."

I told him that's simple....
just tell her the tooth fairy does not
come to the grandparents' house.

But he thought I should break that news to her, so I did.

But the questions kept coming.
She was then worried that if she put the tooth under her pillow at
home, then her mom would not get to keep it.
"What if Mommy wants to keep my tooth?"

That's when I gave up and said,
"That's between your parents and the tooth fairy."

One of the perks of being a grandparent. We get to shove all the
decision making onto the parents...where it is anyway.

Every time Téa's parents go on one of their long hikes I worry.

Then when they come back with pictures,
I see they were just fine.

No matter how old my kids get, it never stops.
