Have you seen The Artist?

Even though it was picture of the year, I didn't think it would appeal to us.
I love dialogue. I love it so much that I could listen to people all day long.
Even people I don't know. So when I heard this was a silent film,
I thought I'd pass on it.

Then Tyler sent me an email highly recommending Den and I see this.
How could I resist Tyler? But that was before I learned it was no longer in the theaters.
Den and I have not been blessed with attention spans for movies in our home
so I didn't see us watching it anytime soon.

Then last night I came up with a plan.
First, we went to Redbox and actually checked The Artist out.
We had to ask one of the other customers how long we could keep it for.....
thinking it may take us days before we get around to watching it.
When this guy said we had 24 hours we thought we better get right to it.
(And btw, when did movies go down to $1.20 a night?)

So I told Dennis not to worry, we would just watch this movie in 15 minute increments,
taking 10 minute breaks in between.
I set the timer.
15 minutes later I was off to clean the kitchen and he went back to his computer work.
Then we met up again, for the next 15 minutes. At the end of that round,
Dennis said, "Wait, I want to see a little more first."
That's when I realized we were hooked so I turned off the timer,
and we watched the rest of the movie.

It was captivating and beautiful.

Really have you seen this? It's wholesome, no offensive words. No words hardly at all.

I came away with two main messages:
1. No one really needs to be a "has been."
Time does not stop progressing, and neither should we.

2. There was a clear message of kindness and loyalty.
A young star did not forget the man who helped her become.
She never got so pumped up that she forgot the kindness and help done to her.

I love movies with heart. I think that's what I look for above all else.
I admit, I did miss dialogue. But really, it was a treasure all its own.

Next, I would like to see People Like Us...Has anyone seen that?
Is it any good?

I'm so glad that you and Dennis liked it! After Tyler and I watched it, I decided that this is one of my new favorites. It was just so beautiful to watch.

I agree with Karen. I already want to see it again. I think the silent aspect of it is very intriguing because it's unique in today's filmmaking.

"People Like Us" is a very good movie! We got the one you watched on Netflix. Richard walked out after 10 minutes. I hung in there just to see what all the hoopla was about. It was okay, BUT WAY TOO LONG. Susan

Thanks Susan for the heads up about People Like Us.

Dad left about 15 minutes too early. It took us about 25 minutes to get into it. And once we did, we really did enjoy it. I kept thinking as I was watching it...'so this is how people dressed at the time my parents' were born.'

I'm still chuckling about "when did movies go down to #1.20 a night?" because Redbox used to be $1 a night and we still grumble about the price hike around here! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to fork up the $1.20 and go watch it!

I'm so happy to see your recommendation! I have been wanting to see it for quite a while now but was too sick when it was in theaters. So, now that I know it is at Redbox, I'm going to rent it, yay!
And I didn't realize Redbox had gone up 20 cents... :)

I haven't watched this movie for the same reason you didn't. I like dialogue!

But maybe I will reconsider!

I too like Sue might reconsider this movie now that you have wrote so highly of it.
Actually I have not heard anything bad about it I just am use to dialogue like of course we all are.
Glad you enjoyed your movie night.

Steve and I watched it last night. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and be sure to watch the special features at the end. They're really good.

Oh we took it back the next day...I didn't know anything about special effects at the end. DARN.
Just curious...Did it take you a while in the movie to adjust to no dialogue? We were lost at first. It took different viewing skills, but once they kicked into gear, we really enjoyed it.

I want to see this now!!! I love when you blog about movies, you give such thoughtful reviews. :-)

Yes, I was really wishing there was talking, being such a talker myself, but I got used to it.
The special features are interviews with the actors, so you get to hear their voices and see them in ordinary clothes as modern people. The female lead, a French woman, was especially charming I thought. And the lead guy was great too.

I haven't seen either film, but I'd like to see them both! Ray is not a fan of black and white films, and he is not a fan of silent films ~ I love them both! I am addicted to 'old movies' and I will often watch silent films (and it's much easier since I finally got new glasses!).

Thanks so much for the review!
Love and Prayers,
Eileen
