The Hunger Games

You'll never guess what these girls saw last night.

I should say...I would never have guessed.
I think I am the only one who has not read The Hunger Games.
Except for Dennis.
I only saw the previews
and closed my eyes and feared I would have night mares.
No way am I seeing the movie. I'm such a wimp.

That's Karen (Tyler's wife) in the middle.
Along with Karen's nieces, Jessica and Emily (Kim and Kris' daughters)
How sweet they all went to the midnight showing together in Logan, Utah!
I wonder how they liked it

Did you see it? Are you going?

Jake went last night too. Me? I am with you Jill! I thought I was the only one who did not read the book or plan to see the movie!

So, what's so great about this movie? Anybody seen it and can tell me? Sounds scary and violent. Am I right?

I don't get it either. Such nice people are LOVING the book...so there must be lots about this we just don't understand.

The previews make it look so violent, the premise sounds so gruesome, but there is something magical about the books. I don't usually like violent movies, but I am so excited to see this one. Hopefully we will get to see it in a couple of weeks when my parents are here (free babysitters!)

Karen loved the movie, and I've seen very positive reviews. It's an interesting premise, and my limited opinion is that it is very well cast. The main actress, Jennifer Lawrence, is the second youngest person ever to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress (back in 2010).

For not having read the books or seen the movie, I can't say much beyond that.

I didn't think it was my kind of book either, but I actually enjoyed them very much. I am looking forward to the movie and my husband and son are going too! It's not just for girls! :) Joel read all three books in about 2 days. He has since gotten a few friends to read them too. Though I am looking forward to the movie, I don't have to go to the midnight one or even a premier weekend. I can wait a few days...

I had not even heard of this movie until about a week ago when our local morning news station was having a contest for free tickets to see it. Then I happened to hear on the radio that this is supposed to be bigger than the Twilight series. I don't even know what it is supposed to be about, so, I doubt I will see it since I didn't ever get into the Twilight series.

I went last night with four of my kids. I hadn't read the books (just don't have the time). My kids read the books and loved them. I have to say that I loved the movie! It was well casted as Tyler had mentioned. I loved the costumes and makeup. I want to go see it again. In fact, I want to read the book now and the other two following the Hunger Games (that's if I can find the time). It is not as bad as you think with violence. But knowing you Mom, it would probably bother you. I say its a must see!!!!!

I have no idea about any of this. I won't go see it because I don't see movies.

Karen wins the "good sport" award for going with Emily and Jessica. I had to laugh when Emily asked Karen if she was "Team Peetah" or "Team Gale" and Karen replied "Team Haymitch". You'd have to read the books to know why that was so funny, but it was and I got a good laugh out of it and had to agree.

I read the books and enjoyed them. I'll also see the movie.

LOved how they even had matching Team shirts! I love that people really make an event out of their favorite things in life! : )

I went I went!:) It was soooo good and I was very impressed, it's a must see! The movie really followed the book and it played out really well. I made a shirt and this was my very first premiere...TEAM PEETA!!!:)

Well I took Kaidy to the premiere for her 15th birthday. I read the first two books the two days before. The books were of course better than the movie but it was fun to see the action come to life and another person's interpretation of the characters. Lots of violence though so I had to close my eyes a lot, I would never imagine I'd be at a movie that people are trying to hunt other humans. The love triangle and the costumes kept me interested.

Fascinating book, pretty good movie. I can understand why it would not appeal to some people, though. As one lady in my book group said, "I don't read books about children getting hurt. It happens enough in real life"

She had a point - but I still loved it.

Some of my kids have read the books and seen the movie and like them both...I'm worried it may be too violent for me, but we plan to take our teens so we can be with them when they watch it...yikes!

I definitely don't think that you would enjoy the movie, Jill. And I'm not sure that you'd enjoy the books either. The Hunger Games aren't for everyone. But the genre of literature that the trilogy is in isn't for everyone either.

People around the internet are acting like this is the first (and thus shocking) tale of violence, but it really is just the latest incarnation of the same old tale (corrupt government, rebellion, revolution, etc.).

Personally, I think that Suzanne Collins did a wonderful job reinventing the themes in this story and adapting it to a younger audience. (Although, it still might be too mature a subject matter for some.)

The truth is, I would love to be a part of or teach a class revolving around similar short stories and novels. Books/stories I would include: The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell (1924), The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (1948), Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (1932), The Giver by Lois Lowry (1993), and The Road by Cormac McCarthy (2006)--and those are just the ones off the top of my head. But again. These stories are not for everyone.

But I love this stuff. It's fascinating to me.
