The Talent Code

Okay, so I read on one of my favorite blogs about this book, The Talent Code. Natalie (the writer of the blog...not the book) has FIVE sons, the oldest being in kindergarten. Yes you read that right. I figured if she had time to read it and rave about it, then it must be good. Plus I had read on Amazon those who enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers would most likely like The Talent Code. So I bought it.

Problem is I left it on the kitchen table after having read just 5 pages. I was already hooked on it but guess what? My dear husband found it, picked it up, and started reading. He said he "just wanted to see what it was about." Instead, he was totally captivated and hardly put it down. He would repeatedly say, "Just let me know when you want it back and I'll give it to you." Right, like I'm going to take it out of his hands.

So a day or so later I was at Target
and happened to find a book I thought he might like....
only because he loved The Christmas Sweater
by this same author.
I thought I would just buy it for him and use distraction.
You know, 'here's a good book for you, now give mine back.'
What I really wanted was to read my book in our hotel room in Pismo last weekend.
So I packed Snow Angel in our suitcase hoping to make the switch with him.

Instead, he did this most of the time we were alone.
Notice how his mouth is slightly open?
That's how he reads when he's really into it.
So I didn't have the heart to take it from him.

So last night he came into the kitchen where I was, and actually said, "I want to thank you for loaning your book to me. I finished it!"

I laughed. "Loaned my book to you?"

He totally ignored what I just said. I could tell he was still in deep thought over the book.
Instead he said, "How I wish I had a book like that to read when I was raising my kids."

I know he's wanting to discuss it all with me but the one rule I made with him was not to talk about it till I have read it, too. So I will start back on page 5 today.

Meanwhile... Dennis has a new book to read.

I do wonder why the author's name is bigger than the title of his book...

I'll let you know how he likes it, but here's one review:

I really like that both you and Dennis are readers. I'm not sure why, but it's a quality I admire in both of you.

As for Glenn Beck's name being bigger than the title of the book--what's really selling that book is the fact that it's by Glenn Beck. Not the title, the subject matter, or the cover art. (You even said that you got it for Dennis because he had previously read and liked a book by the same author.) It's a very common publishing ploy.

Good point Karen. I just don't think I had ever seen the author's name so large on the front of a book.

I really don't like the title of it. It sounds cheesy. But the reviews coming in look really good.

We loved Outliers and are always looking for good books to read together. Thanks for the recommendation! I already put in my request it at the library!

Somehow, the size of the name on Beck's book doesn't surprise me...

;)

PS. I need to check out that Talent Code book. It must be good!

Thankfully your husband seems to be a fast reader. My husband usually reads 2-3 books at a time and it takes him forever to finish one. Thanks for the review!

Well, at least your husband reads the books. My husband buys them and then doesn't read them. He has books by O'Reilly AND Glen Beck and he hasn't read any of them. I don't know what his problem is. He says he has never liked reading books. He will turn over a few pages in a magazine, but that's it. He loves to watch the two of them on TV and has subscribed to the Glen Beck on the computer. He even bought a gizmo that connects Glen's computer program to his TV so he can watch it on the large screen.

Glad you had a nie weekend though. That Talen Code book sounds like something I would be interested in reading even though my family has been grown for a very long time.
