A bizarre story with a wonderful announcement

I belong to an online list called LDSReturnedMissionaryMoms. We are a very large group of women from all over the world with one thing in common....we all have children who have served missions....which means we have plenty more than that in common. We are all about the same age, have adult children, and many of us are Grandmas, or soon to be. Whenever I need to know the answer to something, I can put a question on and have 10 replies in 15 minutes.

We share lots together on this list. One day last September, I sent a Grandmahoney blog link to the list. It was about a Dr Laura call that I thought they might be interested in. They were. The subject was a young married LDS woman who was thinking about leaving the church.

Several of the RMMoms listened to this Dr Laura call via my blog. One in particular, Kary Nelson from Colorado, scanned down my blog while listening to the call and spotted a different blog post of mine showing my niece Lindsay with her boyfriend Gard. This is the immediate email I received from Kary after seeing that.

"Okay, Jill--while I was listening to Dr. Laura I scrolled down your blog just to have something to look at and suddenly I was looking at the back of three women standing in the kitchen of my family's beach house!!  And pictures of my SON!!!  Yep, I'm Gard's mom!  And that is the house my parents built (twice--the first one burned down)  with the help of the whole extended family on the land my grandfather won in a poker game back in 1927!  How amazing is that?!!  Lindsay and Gard will be at our house in a couple of weeks, in fact--one of their monthly trips to see each other.  I am assuming from your post that Lindsay is your niece, right?  I've only spent a couple of hours with her, but she is a wonderful girl."

Bizarre, wouldn't you say??

Well guess what? Lindsay and Gard just got engaged!! They will be married this May 28th...hey, isn't that McKay and McKenna's 1st anniversary?

Take a look at these pictures taken minutes after becoming the future Mr. and Mrs.

As I was out driving today it suddenly occurred to me that Gard's name will fit in very nicely with with the other bird names in Lindsay's family:
Gardner Jay  (uh oh, his mom just told me his name is actually Jay Gardner, but he goes by Gard)
Lindsay Lark

Along with his future sisters in law:
Robin Suzanne
Natalie Wren
Whitney Jay

I believe it's Jay Gardner...but we still prefer to think of them in terms of their early childhood monikers, Baby Relentless and Little Whip. Believe me when I say these two were made for each other...

It's a small world when it comes to Mormons, isn't it?

Such fun!

Yeah, I guess getting engaged is an alright thing to do. Just kidding, I'm ecstatic (in case you couldn't tell by the pictures)!

Thanks for the post, Jill! It was such an exciting night and it's so fun to have these pictures to document such a momentous occasion! I think Gard and I both feel pretty lucky to have found eachother and to be joining one another's families.

P.S. Dad, I think our childhood monikers mean we're in for trouble when we have kids.

We've been waiting for this all day! How exciting! We're so happy for Gard and Lindsay. The pictures are so fun. So who was Baby Relentless and who was Little Whip? Love, Dad and Susan

When Lindsay and Whitney were very small and in Indian Guides (or was it Maidens?) I had to choose an Indian name for each of us, announce it publicly, and throw a small stick in the fire to memorialize the occasion...Lindsay was named "Little Whip" and Whitney was called "Sunshine". At the ages of 5 and 7 these names fit them perfectly and still do. I was, of course, Maple Bar. (Soaring Eagle and Running Bear had apparently already been taken.)

What a fun post. I love reading about your family and it was such a crazy thing to find out that your blogging friend was Lindsay's fiance's mother. As Sue said, it really is a small world when it comes to Mormons. I love that too. I am always meeting someone who knows someone else I know. The pictures are darling too. They surely are an attractive couple and I do hope they will be very happy.
