Update on McKay

Okay, so it turns out McKay goes to the BYU health center, after all, this morning.  From there he was sent to Utah Valley Medical where he was suppose to be seeing an ENT.  Instead, he saw a nurse practioner.  She (or was it a he) does not know what is wrong with him either except to say it may be an infection in his salivary gland.  How does one get an infection there?

So he was put on antibiotics and steroids.

Blood tests were run and it shows there is no infection.  So McKay asks the NP,  "Why then am I being given an antibiotic if I don't have an infection?"  She told him that not all infections show up in the blood.  That's news to me.

Blood normal, no fever, localized swelling.  What do I know, but it sounds like it could be an allergic reaction of some kind.

P.S.   I wish, that as our kids become adults, the worry section of the Mom's brain would automatically shut off.

Yowch. He doesn't have mono, does he? That would have shown up in blood work. It is good that he's on an antibiotic so if there is any bacteria in there it can start to attack it. Hopefully they figure out what it is, and more importantly, eradicate it, soon! Mystery symptoms and unknown ailments can be very frustrating. Poor McKay!

Heidi~ I wondered about mono, too. But he I don't think he has any symptoms other than the swelling and pain. Not even a sore throat.

And if anyone would have empathy with McKay right now, it would be you Heidi. You just went through your adventure of mystery symptoms:(

Jill,
Jenna had the same thing. It was a virus. Advil, and warm or cold compresses helped. I am thankful her doctor is a genius so she did not have to go through unnecessary blood work.

Cindy~ So how long did the virus last when Jenna had it? Did she have the swelling underneath her tongue as well as the gland in her neck?

I'm glad to hear the update. After we raise our own children, the worry section of our brain goes into automatic worry over adult children and then on to grandchildren. It never ends! Thanks for the update. I hope he feels better soon.

Jill, if you ever figure out how to turn off that "mom worry thing" let me know!!!

Well I don't understand why we still have the worry when we can't do anything about it. It's a necessary thing when they are little and growing...Moms are meant to worry in order to protect, and have the human race survive. But once they are grown and gone, it seems that valve in the heart (or brain) should shut off. But it doesn't.

Jill,
Jenna's was not under her tongue. Her neck was huge and it went into her face. The swelling lasted about a week.

Poor Jenna! That must have been HORRIBLE. And all from a virus!

Sounds like a blocked saliva gland. I had one a few months ago and it was very painful. I had a HUGE swollen lump like the size of a golf ball under my jaw and it hurt to eat or talk--it also looked terrible. However, after about a week it went away on its own. I didn't take any medication.

Moms always worry, and we always will. I guess it's part of the job description.
