We found a way to get rid of wasps!

No chemicals
Environmentally safe
No maintenance
No dead wasps

Dennis came home from Utah a few weeks ago with an idea on how to get rid of our wasps. We have several nests around here apparently, and he even got stung by one a few weeks ago when he was taking out the trash. It seems anytime after 10am the wasps come swarming. Even when I pull weeds they are hovering around.

So he comes home and tells me about this plan he found. He brought home 4 fake wasp nests. He said, according to the package they came in, they will rid your property of wasps. The theory is, wasps are very competitive... if they see a wasp nest in your yard they will go elsewhere to make a nest.

Somehow I just could not grasp wasps thinking this all through.

Apparently wasps really do think. We have had these fake wasp nests here a week now...and the wasps are no where around! They seem to be totally gone. We even went outside today and shook trees and bushes they normally reside in, and NOTHING HAPPENED.Do you see the fake wasp nest right behind the tree?

It took ours about 3-4 days to start working.

Oh how I would have loved knowing about this idea when my boys were small. We had to give up on swimming and playing outside at times because they would just not leave them alone.

I've heard they can be found at Lowes, and other home improvement stores. Or you could try googling them and order online. The ones we have are called, "Bee Free Natural Wasp Deterrent" Den bought them 2 in a package for $8.99. He placed 2 in our backyard and 2 in our front.

I have read that these fake nests do not keep bees away however. But the way I see it, we need bees.

Now if I can just find a cure for earwigs...or what we call "pincher bugs". I have never ever seen a crop like I have the past month or two. Often times when I go into the kitchen or the bathroom I will see one. I don't see ants, or any of other bugs in our house, just earwigs. Lots of them.Anyone have an idea for getting rid of them?
I really don't want to spray chemicals in our house.

Thanks for the wasp idea. We are going to have to try that. We have earwigs too so if you learn what works to get rid of those, do share.

I've talked to others who are also seeing earwigs in their homes this year! We use to see them occasionally, but not several every single day like now.

Good job on faking out the wasps. I love the simplicity of it. Re the earwigs, you are too kind--I would have my pest control guy come out and spray his magic stuff. But you have issues with that, so good luck. You could try inviting the earwigs over for Family Home Evening and giving them a Book of Mormon. That seems to scare some people away. By the way, do earwigs really wear wigs? I wonder where they get them? Love, Dad and Susan

Excellent idea/product. Thank you for the info. How much of a radius does this cover? Are your nests working for the neighbors' wasp issue also? I can just imagine if the neighbors still have oodles of wasps and see your nests thinking you are 'cultivating' habitats!Hopefully you have spread the word to the neighbors that you have not become a 'wasp farm'.
I would think the nests would also deter door-to-door intruders.

I think the package said each one deters wasps up to 200 ft. I guess we better warn our neighbors.

I have heard that putting Listerine in a spray bottle and spritzing will rid the area of earwigs...I have tried it with ants and flies...it seems to be a temporary solution...at least long enough to have a picnic...

I'll have to check my local Lowes for the wasp cure! We don't usually have many wasps, but once in a while we get a nest. At least you can be grateful to have earwigs rather than scorpions--much more painful, as I can testify!

I cannot believe you took a pic of that ugly bug. They smell too when you smash them. YUCK! Good Job on the wasp ridding & good luck on the cure of the ugly bug! YIKES

Trust me Lisa, I didn't take a picture of that bug. I just pulled it off google. When I see these bugs, they don't live long enough for pictures.

I like this fake wasp nest idea. I'm going to try it! We get a wasp's nest right by our front door almost every single year.

Thanks!

Sorry Nurse Tracie, we don't know a natural way to get rid of the snails. I wish we did because we have plenty of those!
