7 year old calls 911

During a home invasion last Wednesday, the 7 year old locks himself and his sister in the bathroom and calls 911.
Listen  to what happens.

I think this video is a good reminder to teach our children how and why to call 911.  When my sons were growing up, everyone seemed to be more aware of this from the program Rescue 911.
I'm not so sure it is stressed as much now. Or is it? Would your children feel confident about calling 911?

I heard the dispatcher was a little shaken up after this call, from hearing the kids crying and screaming when the intruder broke in the bathroom door. This is definitely a good reminder to teach your children when and how to call 911. I would hope that my grandchildren would feel confident about calling 911 if necessary. Thanks for sharing this.

I saw this on the news the other night. They also showed the dispatcher and litle boy together, hugging and crying. I know dispatchers aren't supposed to get emotional on the job, but when a child is in danger, who can blame them?

I think older kids are still very aware of 911, but I have also wondered how often parents now think to reinforce that number for emergencies with little ones. I miss that old show, Rescue 911!

That is good those kids acted quickly, but to see that some people in this world have to have such horrible experiences because some human beings are so sick in the head, makes me sick. I hate that kind of stuff.

Den and I don't watch TV much so I had not heard about this call. But I was struck how this new generation is just not as educated with making 911 calls as the previous one was...at least this is what I suspect. Our boys loved watching Rescue 911 each week, and it was like having a continual reminder of what to do in an emergency. It was great for them to see one scenario after another. Whereas now learning about 911 is more in theory.

I saw this on tv and so I set about having a conversation with Elora. I asked her what she would do if some men broke into our home, she looked at me like I was stupid and said I would scream! Then she rolled her eyes at me and asked, "And where are YOU when these bad men are breaking in"... So much for a teachable moment!

I'm sorry this was upsetting Darlene. That is the very reason I will never put our Rescue 911 episode on my blog.

I can see a great family home evening lesson using this video. The parents could describe some crisis and either the parent or the child could act like the bad guy and others could practice the call on a disconnected phone---or to someone who's clued in to act like the 911 operator--sort of like a real life situation. I do see possiblities here, similar to a fire drill in a family where a meeting place is agreed upon, etc. That little boy did a great job! Good luck to you young families out there in implementing this valuable training for your children.

This was good. Kids and adults need to know especially when to call 911. Lots of people call wrongly.

Quite a poised young man. I have a feeling he will be the hero in his family for some time to come!

Look what happened last night
