Ear Pain

I'll be back soon but for now I have ear pain and can't focus on much else.

I only write about it here on the chance that one of you have gone through something similar, and perhaps you have some advice for me?

Yesterday I was feeling great. Then last night I went to our combination of 3 wards of Young Women/Young Men for a belated Valentine's dance. As soon as I walked in there I could tell the music was way too loud for me. I should have left right away.

But I didn't.

Still, I did not stay long there. Maybe 15 minutes? Then the pain was really settling in so I went outside. I felt better out there so stayed and talked to others out in the crisp air for another 20 minutes or so, and then went home.

The pain got worse as the night went on. I was literally up all night long. Whenever I would lie down the pain was even worse.

I rarely go to the doctor, but I had to do something. So my sweet sweet Dennis took off some time from work and we went together.

No infection. Nothing. So the doctor decided my pain came on with the noise. He says my ear drum has suffered trauma and it may take a week to settle down. I'm also running a fever now which he thinks is all part of the trauma.

Perhaps I was the only one there last night who reacted with pain. Still, I have read more than once that even a few hours of very loud music can somewhat damage hearing permanently. So I worry about all those teenagers.

So have you ever had pain from loud noises? I have reacted before, this is not new to me...but never has it lasted this long. I'm usually fine within an hour after leaving.

If you have had this, please do tell me what you did about it.

Jill,

I know that there are some pain drops that you put directly in your ear. You should call and ask your doctor about these. I can't remember exactly what they are called but maybe that would jog his memory.

When you are feeling better would you share how you embed the little music files in your posts with me.

Sorry you are feeling awful. I never had this happen except once when in 7th grade. It was just prior to my eardrum breaking. This doesn't sound the same. That is good that you went to the doctor. Hope you can do/find something to help.

I also have the same request as Cynthia does. Thanks.

Ohhhhh I am sorry you are in pain. Do you possibly have a sinus infection? That happened to my sister and she had that pain as well.

I had pain and partial deafness after spending about an hour in a bowling alley that was sponsoring a teen night with a disc jockey playing such loud music that it hurt my ears EVEN WITH EARPLUGS! The pain and partial deafness lasted for about a week then gradually went away. Didn't have a fever, though. Never again will I subject myself to that level of sound! I just used ear oil and cotton in my ears till it subsided. Poor, baby! Sorry you're in pain! Next to tooth pain, ear pain is the worst!

It seems to me that a fever indicates an infection. I think I'd be tempted to get a second opinion by an ear specialist. Good luck! I know ear pain is a dreadful. I've had a few ear infections in my life and I know they are no fun. Take care.

Thank you for all the comments. I REALLY appreciate them all. My email is down so I can't ask this but on here....Darlene, what kind of oil did you put in your ear? Did the pain interfere with your sleep? I'm sorry you had to go through this but it does help me to know that someone else had this and you DID get better. I am allergic to aspirin and Ibuprofen and Tylenol does nothing for this pain. The dr today asked if I wanted a narcotic and I said no...so I'm just trying to endure this. My fever is very slight...99.2
Rebecca...your sister had ear pain with a sinus infection? Did it hurt elsewhere too? I only hurt in my left ear.
I asked the dr today for some pain drops to put in my ear but he said they wouldn't do any good since I don't have an infection.
Thank you all again for your help and comments.

I used Medicine Wheel ear oil. Wally's ear oil is good too. Both from the health food store. They both have garlic in them and they are kind of smelly, but they worked well. Soothing. Sometimes teeth and sinus problems can effect the ears. So maybe the ear ache is coming from one of those places and they are what are causing the fever? I've used a few drops of straight hydrogen peroxide in my ears before. It bubbles and makes a lot of noise as it comes into contact with bacteria, but it seemed to help with ear problems both me and my children have had. Cotton in the ear is very soothing and keeps cool air out of it.

Even if you have an infection, most mild ear infections heal themselves. Feel better soon!
