Bed Issues

Do you like your bed?
If so, would you leave me a comment and let me know what brand it is?

We have had bed struggles all my adult life. Never have I found one that is still comfortable a year after we purchase it. A few bed sales people have even welcomed us to take a nap on one of their beds, right there in the store. I could do that but Dennis could not, so we don't.

How else can we know if the bed will feel good to sleep in all night long?

One bed that does appeal to me is the Sleep Number Bed...or what ever you call it. I hear you can make it softer or harder, by pressing a number. I don't like the idea, however, of sleeping on something that is plugged in. That is the reason we don't have an electric blanket either, as much as I would love one.

Last week I learned that Marriott has had so many people ask about their beds, that they have begun selling them! We do love Marriott beds. We do sleep well on them. I had asked a few years ago, but I was told their beds are made just for their hotels, and can't be bought anywhere. Apparently this has changed, and I'm excited. I think we will take one more trip to a Marriott hotel before we buy the bed...unless any of you have a better idea.

And also, if you have slept on a Marriott bed, did you like it?

Sometimes.....I just crack up with you. Love Marriott beds and love their hotel chain. As for beds-my sister in law is famed for buying beds and having them pick it up if she doesn't like it. Most stores will guarantee your satisfaction-you just need to be willing to make the call and deal with the return process. I can't do that. But my sister in law returns furniture all the time because she's super picky and the stores pick it up! You might ask Allie Sever if she has a recommendation. She actually sells mattresses straight from the distributor. We have the same problem as you. Beds are hard buys. COSTCO has nice mattresses-I love the one I got Jasmine. GOOD LUCK!

We have a tempurpedic that we have had for almost 5 years and we absolutely love it. You are always welcome to come and take a nap on our bed ;)

The W Hotel also has amazing beds that are available for purchase. Every year in June their website has a 40% off sale, including the mattresses. If you can wait that long this is the best deal in town.

Perhaps you and Dennis will have to book a weekend trip to a W in order to test those beds out!

I have slpt on a Marriot bed and I LOVED it. I even commented to John how I would love to have one. We have had ours for 15 years (since we were married, we got it new (our first purchas together) and it has been through a flood from our upstairs neighbor and it survived! (That was 11 years or so ago). It is a good bed but I think it is time for a new one.

Jill, I used to sleep on the couch when I had company so they could sleep in my bed, so obviously, I'm not fussy and can pretty much sleep on anything. I must not be a princess who could feel a pea under many mattresses. Sounds like you are. It's neat that you are so particular. Seems like I just go through life without a clue. Love your take on things. Love, Susan

We stayed at the Crown Plaza in Toronto for 7 night this past summer, and their big thing is their "good sleep program". Their beds were amazing! We slept so well, but I don't know what they are, but I think they sell them. I do love Marriott beds, but these, I must say surpassed Marriott! Good luck on your bed search, let me know what you come up with, we need a new bed too. I don't like the sleep number one for the same reason you don't and I won't have an electric blanket either. And it does get cold here in Utah. So we have a feather bed.

No SUSAN it is not good that I am particular. I'd much rather be like you. :)

Jill,
I love your blog! This entry reminds me of my mom. She is VERY picky about her bed. She makes my dad research the beds at a hotel before she will agree to make a reservation there. I will have to let her know that you recommend the Marriott when looking for a hotel with a comfy bed. She loves her current bed (my dad might not be so crazy about it...but he'd rather keep the peace than complain too much, I think). I'm not sure what it is, but I know it has a pillow top mattress.

Jill,
I happened onto your blog from GSG in case you were wondering. I like the bed my DH and I currently have. Sometimes he gets a little back pain but that is because he is built weird, I think. It is a Sealy posturpedic mattress called "English Arbour". It has more support at the top and bottom of the bed and has foam like support in the middle of the bed. That makes your butt sink a little if you are like me and carry your weight there. It is most comfortable to sleep on my back, and then my side and then my tummy on this bed. When we bought it, it was around $1300 I think.

Even some more answers in here. Great. I am still looking for that perfect bed. I can't wait to stay at a Marriot now.

I don't care that much about the bed, I am more into the pillow. Any good ones let me know. Anyway, you should talk to my mom about the bed she had when she live on Fairmont. It was great. It was worth the drive just to sleep in it. Good luck in your search.

Jill, what a funny thing it is for me to read this because Mike and I have been matress hunting for months now! We've had the same bed for 14 years now - and it was a hand-me-down! ;) We LOVE the Marriott beds. Whenever we stay there, I get the best sleep and I don't wake up with my back hurting. Their down comforters are nice, too!!! We are really considering getting one, however if I remember correctly from looking at their website, it takes I think 2-3 months for it to be shipped. Of course if we would have done this months ago when we first started looking at beds, we'd have it by now! LOL Good luck!

Jill...if you KNEW how much I loved Mariott beds you'd laugh! That is the best sleep I ever get...maybe being on a vacation has something to do with it, too...lol...but seriously, that is the way to go! :)

My best friend has the sleep by number bed and swears by it. One night when her husband was gone and she had just had surgery I crashed on her bed keeping an I eye on her and it was so nice. They have had it for about 5 years and never had any problems. She loves how if for some reason she wants to "change" the bed for a night or two she can.

I like your blog, and since I also like my bed, I'll tell you our story...
We married right out of BYU, and since it was 1979, we thought a waterbed would be very cool. Bad idea. Very bad idea, and the store refused to take it back, though we'd only used it three nights! (Bad store; always get a guarantee.)

So we moved to California and saved up for a new bed, (the waterbed stressed both of our backs) and found an absolutely awesome one. I loved it so much, no lie, I invited the postal carrier inside to try it out! (We were close friends-she used my bathroom sometimes-and she loved it, too!)
Anyway, it was called a Slumberpedic, and we've had it, I'm not kidding you, for 29.7 years. We even took it with us when we moved to Europe for 2.5 years.
We found out the manufacturer got the foam for it from NASA, and couldn't get anymore, so they went out of business after only a year.

BUT, the good news is, I think they are being made by a Swedish company now, and they are called Tempur-Pedic mattresses. There are even decent knock-offs being made, I think. We still like our own, and don't want to trade it in yet. ;)
Be sure you both try out any mattress you buy. Don't shop when you're tired, or any old thing will feel good. Go early and lay down on it like you snuggle at home, and see if you like it.
I had back surgery when I was 23 years old, and so it is critical for me to have a good mattress. My husband and I both swear by these solid foam types. You never feel when your partner turns over, and they are absolutely silent. No matter how many kids jump on them, they don't complain, and our ten-year guarantee has lasted nearly thirty years.

I have slept on Marriott beds, and they're okay for a week, but I wouldn't want to live on one permanently.

OK.

I'm going now.
