Hymns that speak

I've been pondering hymns lately and trying to decide on the ones best for my brother's funeral.
I called my sister, who is printing up the programs, with the info. While waiting on hold I was going through the hymn book AGAIN and then this one struck me, "Lord, I Will Follow Thee"...even more than the one I had originally chosen for the opening hymn. Robin was equally impressed so this is the one we have chosen.

I won't put the entire hymn here but read the 2nd verse:

"Who am I to judge another when I walk imperfectly?
In the quiet heart is hidden Sorrow that the eye can't see.
Who am I to judge another?
Lord, I will follow thee. "

And verse #3:

"I would be my brother's keeper;
I would learn the healer's art

To the wounded and the weary I would show a gentle heart.
I would be my brother's keeper.
Lord, I will follow thee."

I like funerals where I leave wanting to be a better person.

President Monson gave a talk once saying, "Where have all the years gone? That's why we need to heed the words of the hymn, 'Improve the shining moments. Don't let them pass you by.' Whether we are old or young, our time does flee. Then the body is placed in the earth. But the spirit goes home to God who gave it life."

So he has inspired me to choose "Improve the Shining Moments" for our closing hymn that day.

We will sing all the verses, but check out Verse #2
"Time flies on wings of lightning; We cannot call it back.
It comes then passes forward Along it's onward track.
And if we are not mindful, The chance will fade away.
For life is quick in passing. 'Tis as a single day.'

And the last verse my favorite:
"Improve each shining moment. In this you are secure.
For promptness bringeth safety And blessings rich and pure.
Let prudence guide your actions; Be honest in your heart;
And God will love and bless you And help to you impart."

Yes, perfect.

Hi Jill,

I had a "Chris" brother. He died in his thirties, we weren't sure if it was suicide, probably not, he was found dead near the railroad tracks. Like Chris, Jimmy was helpful and sweet, but damaged from substance abuse. My prayers are with you. Connie
