Even I remember my parents laying down the back seats of their station wagon and making a bed out of blankets and pillows for us so we could sleep on road trips!
I completely understand why this is no longer acceptable, but gosh, I have some happy, sleepy memories of my father picking me up from the back of the car and carrying me in to bed after a long trip.
Yep. I miss this. I had so much fun riding around in the back of pickup trucks as a kid. My kids often rode standing in the back seat of our car (so they could see) and holding on to the front seat. I remember saying, "Hold on!" when we'd make a sharp turn, or using my arm to restrain them in the front seat when we came to a quick stop. Dangerous, probably, though we never had an injury due to this method. That's 15 years if "unsafe" driving practices with four kids without an incident. I think it made my kids pay more attention to the drive. They were always looking out the windows and anticipating what was going to happen. That's not necessary nowadays. darlene

Oh, I might mention that we raised our kids in rural areas, so we had very little traffic and freeway driving.
