Is this normal?

I don't think so.

I was just sitting at our kitchen table writing a birthday card to McKay when suddenly I heard a huge roaring noise. It sounded like a humungous truck had suddenly landed in our backyard.

Then all went silent. I looked out the window to see this.

I mean really, how does a tree just decide to jump out of its spot?

It wasn't all that windy outside. A little, the wind chimes were breezing. But not enough to make a tree suddenly uproot and fling across our pool fence.

Every week of my birthday, for the past 16 years, this tree would bloom these gorgeous purple flowers all over. Just my birthday week and maybe a few days after that, and then they would be gone.

I am quite happy I was not out there with our grandkids at the time.
They had just left 30 minutes before.

Looks like your tree wanted to take a dip in the pool. Too bad the poor guy missed.

That really is crazy, though.

Karen, that makes about as much sense as anything I can come up with.

Wow, glad no one was outside at the time.

I've never seen anything like this. And it left ALL it's roots behind! Unless it didn't have much root, or not very deep I guess, and that would explain it. I guess it just got too top-heavy?
Does it look like it's rotted out? Not from the photos.
'Looks like it just cracked off and keeled over.

I'm sure you'll miss it.
But thank goodness no harm to family or home!
Love and Prayers,
Eileen

Wow!! I've seen thick tree branches split before in a strong wind but I've never seen a whole tree fall over in a little breeze. I'm sorry you won't have your purple birthday flowers anymore. Thank goodness you and the grandkids weren't there.

Oh no! So glad no one was around when this happened. If it was my house, my husband would be out with the chain saw, making firewood!!!!!

YIKES!!! So glad nobody was hurt. Maybe you can plant another one in the same spot so that it will be there to enjoy for many birthdays to come.

Don't you just hate to lose a tree that has given you such pleasure? We lost one too, but not quite the way you did. Ours got a disease and had to be cut down.

So sorry you had this happen.

Actually we did solve the mystery...sort of. Dennis called the gardener and he came right over to take a look. He diagnosed the tree with termites! He said that is what took it down. I had no idea termites can get in a tree. Now I'm worried about the other trees, and our house! We will be checking all that out soon.

It is crazy honey but out here where I live we had two huge oak trees do the very same thing on the same day. Two weeks before them lightening struck two big ones so now we are cleaning up four huge trees.
I think the drought this summer caused these out here to fall.
Thank goodness it missed your house.

Maggie

Well...what I don' get is where the LOUD noise came from that made you look out the window? I can't see what everyone is talking about but thanks for the comment stream, I got good visualization! I got a name for an excellent termite company. I can't remember the name off hand but it's not clark or the other big one.

A guy & his son operate it & he's been around for years. He's not lazy either, his son went down under my house & crawled all over to do his thing. It wasn't cheap, but I really felt like he was thorough & would stand behind his work & his name.

That is so sad...what the heck happened to make the tree fall over?

Grandma Honey said...

Hi Grandmotherfairy!...the gardener said termites cause the downfall of the tree. Who knew!

Lisa~ That loud noise was the tree breaking off and falling over and then squishy the cast iron pool fence. Guess a tree weighs a lot!

When I saw the picture I wondered if it could be termites...since the roots were still in the ground. But that is still really strange. Hope the trees, fences and houses all around are alright!!
So glad you and the kiddos had gone inside!

Look what happened last night
