McKay's Amazing Update

You know how I just did not feel right about McKay being treated with steroids and antibiotics for his swollen glands (on his neck and under his tongue) because no one seemed to know what was causing it?  Urgent Care, the BYU health center, and the NP at Utah Valley Medical, could not diagnosis it.

So McKenna's aunt explains his symptoms a few days ago to her ENT neighbor, who has been out of the country.  He said he was 95% sure what McKay's problem is.  He said it is not that common but he usually sees it in males about his age.  He thought he had a "salivary gland stone."...similar to a kidney stone, but in his gland under his tongue.  95% sure, he said, just by listening to his symptoms.  He said he may need surgery to have it removed.

So early this morning when their alarm went off, McKay noticed a hard stone in his mouth that had obviously come out while he was sleeping.
He said it's about the size of 1/2 a peanut!

We are waiting now to see if his symptoms go away...if this is the only stone there.
But I think it is wonderful that now we know what is going on!

Strange, huh?

Ohmigoodness! Very strange. How do they get there? How do they get out? One learns something new every day. Love, Dad and Susan

Susan~ Those are the very questions they wonder, too. :)

I've never heard of that! But hey, my guess of infected salivary gland wasn't all that far off!

Maybe I should take up medicine.

heehee

;)

PS. Glad it's diagnosed now...and something fairly benign, assuming he doesn't end up with surgery, that is. But even then...it could be worse, right?

Thank you for all your comments. I just think it's good to get the odd diagnosis out there. Someone may need this info later.

oh John has patients with this all the time. Usually he is able to kind of squeeze it out.

Rebecca...Very interesting. So do you know if the stones come back again?

Oh my goodness! What a crummy experience. what a relief to have some answers though! I hope recovers on his own. If not, thank heavens for surgery.

Right, Krista, surgery would not be so horrible, if it comes to that. We are just thankful to know what was causing this!

John said he will most likely get them from time to time but could be years apart. When he has a patient with one, he tries to pop it out with 2 q-tips, and that usually doing oral surgery on it can cause more problems. I feel bad I didn't think to ask John when all this was going on, he knew exactly what it was when I told him tonight.....!!!!!!!!!!!! For some reason I was thinking more along the lines of an ear/throat infection, not a dental kind of thing!!

Rebecca~ I hope McKay and McKenna see your comment. I didn't realize it was a dental thing either!

So interesting! I'm glad there are some answers!

A friend of mine just mentioned a few weeks ago about something similar that happens to her, but it's when her tonsils flare up and she does get a "stone" of some sort. I even thought about that when you first mentioned McKay's issue, but figured it was different since it was under his tongue. But yes, it actually comes out eventually as a stone. It sounds awful!

Oh my goodness. It sounds dreadful actually. It's always the "not-knowing" that seems to be the worst. I hope they get this figured out. Be sure to keep us posted!
