This is one of her best calls. As you know, I don't agree with every piece of advice that Dr. Laura gives, but I do love the fact that she knows how important religion is in a person's life and she always seems to encourage that. Thanks for sharing!!

I don't always agree with her but she makes a good point regarding the value of any church, not just LDS. "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" seems to fit.

This was great! I loved what Dr. Laura said about 'separating religious tenets from people' for that is something I struggled with for a few years in my own religion recently. And while I didn't distance myself from my basic religious beliefs and I didn't distance myself from God, I did distance myself from my Church. It felt almost hypocritical for me to walk into Church, to listen to these men preach about right and wrong when they were either involved in wrong-doing or took part in covering it up, and it took me quite awhile to come back to Church.
My husband grew up in a faith different from my own and he converted to my religion after ten years of marriage. He is still deeply hurt and disappointed by the scandal in our Church and he only accompanies me to Church now for the sake of our grandson (my daughter has left Jayden's religious upbringing to us).

I read back here on all I've missed and I really enjoyed reading your journal entries, I had composition books like that too in my teenage years that I would use as a diary, but I have no idea where they are now. I also had a friend that kept one about our friendship and she gave it to me as a birthday gift once, it was fun to read about our escapades!

McKay and McKenna's commercial was great! And I was happy to read that he is doing well. I keep you and your beautiful family in my prayers, Jill.

The twins are growing so fast and they are both so adorable! I laughed out loud at some of the photos!

I also enjoyed your homework video, and I have been thinking about that a lot lately, how we are such a Nation of Consumers, and so wasteful (myself included)! Ray had told me about how light bulbs can be made to actually burn for years and years but they are made to burn out quickly to force us to purchase more, so the computer scenario didn't really shock me but it was amazing to see that National Happiness chart! I just recently saw a video about life in the early sixties, and it left me feeling so nostalgic and sad, and sort of longing for the way life used to be. I think a lot of people are feeling like this now.

'Always wonderful to visit here, Jill.

I tried posting twice on my blog but nothing is showing up! I'll try again tomorrow and see if I have any luck.
All the best to you,
Eileen

Jill, I tried leaving a comment but at first I got an error message, so I left your site and re-entered. Then I was able to leave a message but when I hit publish it said the message was too long!
Oh well, I guess I did go on and on.

'Just want you to know that I was here and I was happy to catch up with you.
My blog is not cooperating again.

You and your beautiful family are in my thoughts and prayers.
All the best,
Eileen

I have heard Dr. Laura comment in the past that a Dr. Carlfred Broderick at USC was a mentor to her during her training. Dr. Broderick was a semi-regular guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the 70's and 80's, known for his sense of humor and family friendly anecdotes. He as also an LDS Stake President during some of those years, so I have always assumed that it was partly his influence that contributed to Dr. Laura's generally favorable view of LDS people...

I was actually listening to Dr. Laura the other day when this call came on. I held my breath wondering what she would say....I was happy with the outcome. And I love her point that it is usually the people that we have issues with, not the actual religion that we dislike. Good thing to remember....
