On Being a Father

The above is a picture of my sons Logan and Brock in 1980, with their Dad.

I wrote the following for a small publication in 1988, for their Father's Day issue:

You lived on a farm??? In all the years that I've known you, you have never mentioned that. I guess we learn something new everyday. I think as mothers we do tend to think of our children as babies whereas the father thinks of them more as adults. It's probably a good balance in the long run. I know Craig was that way and now our boys are that way with their children. What a very nice post as we approach Father's Day. Thanks for sharing.

We did not live on that farm for long. It belonged to Bill's parents so we were just there for several months I think while they were traveling.

I love this post. I never knew Bill very well and have always felt bad about that. He sounded like a very wonderful man.

Beautiful Father's Day post, Jill! Your article very much parallels my own feelings about how Ray and I are with our children (especially the boys!). And as proud as I am of the men and women they have grown into, I will always think of them as my babies.
Thanks for sharing, Jill!

I saw the same thing in the way my dad treated my brothers growing up. On the other hand, I think many moms do the same with their daughters, being busy preparing them for womanhood while the dads just see the little girls they need to protect.

Look what happened last night
