What we do when we don't feel well

We have a tradition in our family.
It's been going on for decades.
I think it started when my sons were babies.

When any of us are not feeling the best, I put chicken soup in our crockpot.

Yesterday I woke up to my nose and throat itching, and just not feeling terrific.
May is my challenging month for allergies.

I'm allergic to Star Jasmine, and they are in full bloom right now.
Den chopped all ours down a few years ago, but I don't think he got them all because look what's back:

So I started up the Chicken soup with this:

or you can use any kind of chicken broth...at least 32 ounces or more.

Then I just add to it, whatever I have on hand.
Yesterday it was:

About 1/2 cup - 1 cup each:
red pepper
peas
carrots
spring onion
corn
celery
red potato

I also add:
1/2 t dry basil
1/2 t oregano
1 t salt

I throw in some left over chicken from my freezer.
When I don't have that, I use canned chicken. It works just as well.

About an hour before we want to eat I cook some brown rice or egg noodles separately on the stove, and then add it in the crock pot.

We love it and it seems to cure anything.

Sounds delicious. Aren't crockpots the best?! Hope you're feeling perky again soon. Love, Dad and Susan

I'm surprised you don't put garlic in the chicken soup! I thought that was the "secret ingredient" that makes people get well. Maybe it's just the hot chicken broth that does the trick! (And the love, of course!) Anyway, my chicken soup recipe has almost a whole head of garlic. It is my old standby for curing just about anything that ails us!

I usually do put garlic in my soup but I didn't have any yesterday. Forgot to mention that.

I like this tradition too because I know that a good meal is coming at the end of the day, even if the sick person gets worse by then. It is so easy to put together. I know there were days when the boys were little and I'd just get the broth going, and add things through out the day to it. I'd usually get the bread maker going too.

When we aren't well here, I do the same thing. We love homemade chicken noodle soup.
Yum.
Too bad it won't cure your jasmine problem...if you used it on the jasmine, it would probably thrive!
It is absolutely beautiful though.

I'm sad you are allergic to Jasmin...I love that stuff...I would plant it all over my yard if I could...the smell just reminds me of Spring. Hope you feels better soon!

It looks delicious! Sometimes the old cures are the best cures! (I'm with Darlene--I add garlic to just about everything!)

How long do you cook it for? Sounds delicious. Crockpots are great to use on hot days when you don't want to turn your oven on.

I don't have any set time Amy. I just put it in somewhere between early morning and noon and then let it cook all day. I use my very small crockpot for this recipe so that one cooks quickly. When the boys were all home I would use my larger crockpot and then put more broth, etc in. The longer you cook it the softer the vegs will get...so it depends on how you like it. Oh, and I guess you could put in raw chicken but I always just use left over chicken that has already been cooked. I put in fresh, frozen, even canned vegs...whatever I have. It always turns out no matter what I do. The basil and oregano really give it good flavor along with whatever vegs I put in.

That sounds like a great idea! Traditions are so wonderful because it is tradition. You just know what to do & it's familiar & happy.

This reminds me of my mother in law. On any given rainy day-if you go to her house she'll be making Torta Fritas. It's like deep fried scones that the put sprinkled cinnamon sugar on. Every rainy day. It's the best! Your soup sure sounds great!

This soup looks so appetizing!!
I am copying this recipe right now, thank you so much for posting it!
I hope you feel better. My husband, some of my kids, and my grandson all suffer with allergies every Spring, it's gruesome! I love everything in full bloom, it all looks so beautiful, but, oh, the way they suffer I'd rather not see the beauty!

Feel better!
I'll say a prayer.

Soup looks yummy!

I have a Jasmine plant like that - smells so pretty. (But I'm not allergic, either!)

Strikethrough is easy.

Before the word you want to strike enter (in the HTML screen) the "less than" (<)sign, the letter "s", then the "more than" (>) sign.

Type the word you want to strike.

Then type the "less than", "slash", "s", "more than".

Basically it's the same as bold or italic, but use the letter S.

:)
