If the Savior Stood Beside Me

What a comfort this hymn is.

Today we had our annual Primary Program during Sacrament meeting. This was one of the hymns the children sang. I can not listen to them and look into their little faces and not get tears in my eyes.

After our program was over we took all the children into the Primary room and Amber, our chorister, put on a short video with this hymn set to pictures. She told the children they could sing along with it if they would like to. And they did.

They are so pure, so innocent, so good. What a world they live in, what challenges they have ahead of them. Hopefully by learning this song when they are so small, they will hear the words in their minds when they need them, and they will remember particularly the lines, "He is always near me, though I do not see Him there. And because he loves me dearly, I am in his watchful care."

In case you cannot remember the words, or have never heard them:

If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do?
Would I think of His commandments and try harder to be true?
Would I follow His example? Would I live more righteously,
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

If the Savior stood beside me, would I say the things I say?
Would my words be true and kind if He were never far away?
Would I try to share the gospel? Would I speak more reverently
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

He is always near me, though I do not see Him there
And because He loves me dearly, I am in His watchful care
So I'll be the kind of person that I know I'd like to be
If I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me.

This video shows Young Women singing this hymn
rather than small children,
but it still has that same effect on me.

Wow. That was really good. I love that song. Such a good question to ask yourself. Was that Merrilee Webb directing the choir?

I don't know Merrilee Webb so I don't know if she was directing it or not. Such a good song though.

I love that song too. I play the piano in the Primary and Hannah sits right behind me and she really sings this song out and it ALWAYS make me cry.
When we had our last Stake conference the youth sang this song and BOY did it make me cry, seeing youth sing it...I love that video.

You know I've never heard this song before? Thanks for sharing it's meaning and beauty. I can see why you love it so much & the children...so wonderfullly sweet. Where there are children-there will be the Spirit. I love that about the Primary Programs. You ALWAYS feel the Spirit! Lovely.
