Boy Scout foil dinners

I've been making these for at least 30 years. When my sons were all home and in many activities I would often make these up in the morning and then just toss them in the oven when we got home about 4:30. They take just about 25-30 minutes to bake at 475'

On each individual piece of foil place:

raw patty of ground turkey or hamburger
cut up potato pieces
cut up carrots
slice or 2 of onion
salt and pepper
slice or 2 or 3 of butter
few big Tbls of Cream of mushroom soup right out of the can (I only put this on Den's packet)

Then bring the sides of the foil up together and fold over a few times. Fold up both ends too so no steam can escape. If the steam escapes they will take longer to bake.
So you will have little packets like this:

I am a more adventurous eater than Dennis is so I always put extra vegetables in my packet. Last night I had some left over yellow beets from our vegetable club so I put those in. I also added some dill to mine.

Here they are hot out of the oven:

Dennis likes to take his completely out of the foil and put it on his plate. Notice how nice and brown the turkey gets. I like to eat mine right of the foil. I think it reminds me of when all my boys were home and we would all eat this like Boy Scouts.

For many years I would double foil these because that is the way I saw my mom make them growing up. Then about 10 years ago someone told me the double foil necessitated a longer baking time. So then I called my Mom and asked her why in the world had we been double foiling all these years? She said she usually made these when my brothers were going camping and the double foil was to keep the packets from burning over an open camp fire!

Great idea to cook these in the oven! I don't know why I had never thought of doing them in the oven. Thanks for the idea, and your picture of the dinner is great!

Iforgot to ask something. I don't see any meat in your foil dinner. Is it covered up with the veggies or did you not have meat?

I want to make these for my kids also. I think they would get a kick out of it and maybe eat A vegetable. Mindy

Yes, my turkey patty is underneath the vegetables. I can eat soft meat like that but I put my salad in the blender and I quite love it.

I miss that food. Maybe I'll have to make it soon. Post-script: I register for classes tomorrow and I'm planning on doing that cooking class.
